The Secrets to Finding the Best Views of the Iconic Hollywood Sign

Tinseltown (as Hollywood is known) may be feeling the pinch of the COVID-19 Pandemic, but the lure of the place that made the Silver Screen famous is still as strong as ever. You may be eagerly awaiting that Hollywood blockbuster that has seen delay after delay in terms of theatrical release – but that is no reason to avoid immersing yourself in the magic of the place that has kept movie lovers glued to their seats for decades. There can be no more emblematic representation of the magic that is Hollywood than that sign on the slopes of Mount Lee in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Sign That Defined Hollywood!

Those letters may only measure 50 feet high – but it is no exaggeration to state that they represent a promise of entertainment that has seized the world’s imagination as representing that unique Hollywood ambiance, even though they first appeared in 1923 as an advertisement for a property development called ‘Hollywoodland’.

However, as widespread as the knowledge of these iconic letters is – there can be very few more thrilling experiences than seeing the Hollywood sign in person, and for those who want to immerse themselves in that experience, finding the right view of the Hollywood sign is essential. Here are some great choices.

1. The Griffith Observatory

In 2010, Hugh Hefner, founder of the Playboy empire came to the rescue of the Hollywood sign by donating $900,000, which was to be the seed for a fundraising effort that eventually raised around $12.5 million. This preserved the area around the sign from the predations of developers. The 138 acres became known as Griffith Park.

View the Hollywood Sign like an LA Local

The view from the Griffith Observatory over the Hollywood hills fully encompasses the sign and offers incredible photo opportunities. Getting to the Griffith Observatory using the buses departing the Sunset/Vermont Station of the Metro Red Line is simple. There are also numerous hiking trails that start in the parking lot of the Griffith Observatory that will allow visitors to get closer to the Hollywood sign.

2. Hollywood and Highland

One would not think that a shopping mall would be the best place to view the iconic Hollywood sign – but you could not be more wrong. Hollywood and Highland (which also houses the TCL Chinese Theatre) have numerous views of the Hollywood sign that are ideal for those in search of an iconic photo opportunity. It also offers some exceptional dining opportunities – so after you’ve finished taking those Instagram snaps, you can enjoy a great meal (and some retail therapy if you are so inclined).

3. Sunset Ranch Hollywood

For those who want to take a step back to simpler times, when Hollywood was a simpler place and Los Angeles was, for all intents and purposes a frontier town, then exploring the opportunities to view the sign up close on horseback should not be missed. Your only option is Sunset Ranch Hollywood, the only horse ranch in the city of Los Angeles proper. But the folks at this professional venue in the Hollywood Hills are dedicated to making your experience of the hollyridge trail around the famed Hollywood sign an experience that you will not forget. Sunset Ranch offers an incredible choice for outrides in the Hills – but an experience that should not be missed is a Sunset Dinner Ride.

Views of the Hollywood Sign with a Nod to the Old Westerns

Remember, when Hollywood was established it was fueled by the scenery and light which were ideal for the filming of Westerns which were tremendously popular. By taking part in a horseback experience, you will not only get great views of the Hollywood sign, but you will also be tipping your hat to the history of Hollywood itself – a Stetson may provide that extra aura of authenticity.

4. Barnsdall Art Park

On the peak of Olive Hill, at the intersection between Vermont Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard is 11 acres of wonder known as Barnsdall Art Park. The views from this elevated position over Hollywood are almost unparalleled. From here, one can take in Griffith Park, the Observatory, and the Hollywood sign in all its glory.

This is the ideal spot for photography as it offers a panoramic view of the Hollywood sign and the rest of the iconic landscape in all its glory. Adding the attraction of a visit to Barnsdall Art Park is Hollyhock House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In addition, those who want to explore can enjoy the delights of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and the Barnsdall Art Center.

See the Sign and Enjoy Much More

The Junior Arts Center and the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre all offer world-class entertainment experiences. If you want to start off the weekend with a combination of culture and fun there are regular Friday evening wine tastings on the Hollyhock lawns. If it’s weekend entertainment that you crave, then the Saturday evening open-air outdoor movies are a must.

Those looking for the ideal spots to see the Hollywood sign often get much more than they bargained for. The best view of the sign almost inevitably have attractions that add to the value of the experience. You’ll go to get a perfect view of the sign, and stay to enjoy some of the best experiences that Los Angeles has to offer.

Honorable Mentions for Views of the Sign

Driving along Mulholland Drive is an experience in itself, but as you cruise along the ridge of Mulholland Drive to find the best views, you’ll approach the Hollywood Bowl Overlook on the eastern side which provides a great spot to view the sign. As you continue to drive along this famous stretch of road, you’re basically driving behind the sign looking out to the San Fernando Valley.

Lake Hollywood Has It All

The Hollywood Reservoir, also known as Lake Hollywood, is a reservoir located in the Hollywood Hills. Lake Hollywood park wraps around this breathtaking reservoir with some of the best views of the city. This is a perfect spot to view the sign, and take in some of the wonder of Los Angeles.

Beachwood Canyon, An Artist Colony and a Great View of the Sign

While driving along Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, you’ll make a left hand turn on Beachwood Drive, and “vuala”! There is the sign in all its magic. This iconic Los Angeles street gives you the most straight view of the sign. This road leads straight up, and the feeling you get as you drive up this quintessential street as you get ever so close to the sign, is a feeling you’ll never forget. Beachwood Canyon is a wonderful place to grab a coffee, immerse yourself in the artist scene, and settle in for a great view of the Hollywood sign!

The Minimum wage in most places is set either by the state government or, if the state government has not set a minimum wage rate, the federal minimum wage applies. In 2020, the federal minimum wage rate is $7.25 an hour. In California, a state-level minimum wage law came into effect on January 1, 2020. This law requires a different minimum wage rate depending on the size of the business: employers with 26 or more employees must pay $13 an hour or above, while employers of 25 or fewer employees must pay at least $12 an hour.

See Related: 10 Best Neighborhoods To Move To Within Los Angeles

The rate is determined by the size

This minimum wage law was put into place starting in 2017, requiring a minimum wage increase starting in 2017. The goal was a statewide minimum wage rate of $15 an hour by 2023. It became $10 an hour for small employers and $10.50 an hour for larger employers in January of 2017, then rose to $10.50 and $11.00 an hour, respectively, in 2018.

The future looks bright for employees

In 2019, the minimum wage rate was 11 per hour for employers with 25 employees or fewer and 12 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees, then in 2020 it cost 12 per hour for employers with 25 employees or fewer and 13 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees.

photo of people and minimum wage

2021 can’t come soon enough

Starting January 1, 2021, the minimum wage rates will increase again to $13 and $14 an hour. Beginning January 1, 2022, employers with 26 or more employees will reach the desired $15 an hour minimum, while smaller employers with 25 or fewer employees will be required to pay that amount starting in January of 2023.

Employers have an incentive to hire first-time employees

There are a few exceptions to this minimum wage law. The first is for new learners of occupation; they can be paid 85% of the minimum wage during their first 160 hours if they have no previous experience. This applies regardless of age. Another exception exists for disabled workers and for employers who hire such workers. To pay less than the minimum wage to a disabled worker, however, a special license must be obtained from the state.

Los Angeles is paving the way

However, the minimum wage situation in Los Angeles County is more complicated than even the state law implies. The rate of the annual pay increases is faster in the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County (which includes unincorporated areas), and some other nearby cities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Malibu. As a result, employers in those areas with 26 or more employees must pay a wage of at least $15 an hour starting in July of 2020, and smaller employers with 25 or fewer employees must pay a wage of at least $14.25 an hour. Those smaller employers with 25 employees or less have until July 1 of 2021 to comply with the $15 an hour minimum wage requirement.

California is not shy about minimum wage increases

This change doesn’t just affect hourly employees in places like Los Angeles. In the state of California, salaried overtime-exempt employees must be paid at least two times the minimum wage. This, however, is tied to the state minimum wage, not the local one.

Protection for salary employees

Therefore, in 2020, salaried employees in the city of Los Angeles (and elsewhere in the state) must be paid at least $1,040 per week if their employer has at least 26 employees, or at least $960 per week for employers of 25 or fewer employees. This is calculated by multiplying the state minimum wage by two, then multiplying this number by 2,080 hours worked in a year. Since this is tied to the state minimum wage rates, it will continue to increase with hourly wages until 2023.

photo showing an increase on minimum wage

Important to know if you are in sales

Commissioned salespeople have different requirements as well. A commissioned salesperson is exempted from overtime laws only if at least half of their earnings come from commissions and if their hourly rate works out to at least 1.5 times that of the state minimum. Therefore, to be considered an exempt employee, a commissioned salesperson needs to be earning a minimum wage of at least $19.50 per hour at a larger employer or a minimum wage of $18 an hour at a smaller employer, as of January 1, 2020.

Increases up and down California

The city of Los Angeles is not the only municipality in California raising its minimum wages faster and higher than the state requires. In Mountain View, as of January 1, 2020, the minimum wage increased to $16.05 per hour, regardless of the size of the business and Palo Alto raised theirs to $15.40 per hour. San Francisco, Milpitas, Berkeley, and Emeryville have decided that their minimum wage requirements will be determined by the Consumer Price Index.

Minimum wage laws in Los Angeles County and throughout California are more complicated than simply stating a number. Employers and employees alike need to be monitoring current laws and their paychecks to ensure that employees are being paid wages that comply with the law.

Water is a highly discussed subject in Los Angeles due to the city’s placement in California. This makes acquiring and/or funneling water into the city a complex challenge.

The distribution system is unique and doesn’t function in the same manner as other locales. This article will take a deeper look into how water is sourced into the city of Los Angeles every day. This includes the role melted snow plays in California’s water supply.

Top Sources of Water in Los Angeles

1. Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA)

The Colorado River Aqueduct is a major aqueduct system set up for Los Angeles to acquire water. The aqueduct has been in use for more than seven decades and continues to be a go-to source for the city. This water goes through different regions of America including Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada before being funneled south through the Colorado River and eventually making its way to the Los Angeles aqueduct.

The Colorado River Aqueduct begins at the foot of Lake Havasu in Arizona and then begins its journey through various parts of the country including the Santa Ana mountains. Once it hits Southern California, this is when man-made systems are in place to funnel the water and distribute the water supply.

In its current state, the Colorado River Aqueduct is set up and managed by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. It is a project that has been around for a long time and continues to be a successful part of Los Angeles’ water supply system.

Based on recent studies done on the Colorado River Aqueduct, it is capable of providing approximately 1 billion gallons of water each day. This is done with several man-made mechanisms including reservoirs, pumping stations, and the specific use of tunnels.

These are not small systems that are stretched across a few miles. Most of the concrete piping has been laid out and spreads across 50+ miles.

2. California’s State Water Project

Los Angeles also gets its water from one of the biggest water systems in the country known as the California State Water Project.

This state water project manages a system that is extremely robust and encompasses an impressive 20 pumping plants, 4 pumping-generating plants, reservoirs, water storage facilities, pipelines, and more. Everything is coordinated to make sure fresh water is supplied to more than 25 million locals along with a significant amount of land.

The importance of this state water project cannot be stressed enough for Los Angeles as it has a significant role to play in the local agriculture industry. As of right now, it provides quality surface water for almost half of the agricultural produce in the region. It is also responsible for 30% of the California water supply as a whole.

the water quality in Los Angeles has improved over the years

Imported Water Thanks To Substantial Water Infrastructures

To receive the water resources for the Los Angeles aqueduct, there is a specific aqueduct by the name of “Edmund G. Brown California Aqueduct” that is set up across 400 miles. This helps send the water supply through the Sierra Nevada mountains while working its way to Sacramento before ending in Los Angeles and other areas of Southern California.

There are water reservoirs set up for where the water is drained as soon as it arrives in the area. This is water that is used by almost all of the local water companies before distributing the water supply to the local population.

3. Groundwater

The final source of water for Los Angeles is simple local groundwater. Local groundwater is collected through the Earth’s soil with the help of river runoffs, condensation, and/or any other type of natural water occurrence that takes place. As it goes through, it starts to rise through the presence of water springs in the region.

The government has set up water wells around the area to make sure they can tap into this groundwater and use it for the masses. There are public and private wells that have been installed to make sure all of the groundwater is made available as necessary.

Based on research that has gone into water in ground, there are more than 500 groundwater basins/sub-basins that are set up in this part of California. The idea is to make sure all of the surface water is being collected in one place before it can be pulled.

As of right now, more than 35% of Southern California consumes its drinking water from this particular source. This is what makes groundwater such an integral part of the ecosystem and how Los Angeles continues to function safely as a large city with an extensive population to care for.

groundwater is a major source to the overall water system

A Changing Climate Has Made Our Cities Think Differently About Water

Due to climate change and the growing frequency of water droughts in the region, this is where most of the water tends to come from including additional supplies that are set up by local water companies. The groundwater that is used travels close to where the well is set up and there are specific regulations and water rights in place to monitor this part of water collection and distribution.

It’s important to note that these are just some of the water sources that are available in Los Angeles. There are other systems and resources in place for California’s water that make use of recycled wastewater, along with traded water that comes from other parts of the country.

Hiring a moving company can ease the normal stress and burden that can come with packing up your home and your life. However, some people allow the unknown of the moving process to further complicate things and add more stress.

Don’t let the unknown of how much should you tip force you to endure even more stress and anxiety than you have to. In this article, you will learn about some of the different things that you should consider when it comes to tipping movers.

See Related: How Big Is Los Angeles?

Should You Tip Your Movers?

Like any service industry, it is always a good idea to tip your movers. However, you only want to tip movers if they’ve performed their duties reasonably and with proper service. If your movers didn’t do a great job or rather enough to earn the tip, you shouldn’t feel obligated to do so.

However, if your movers went above and beyond to deliver the highest quality service and a job well done, you should be willing to tip your movers. After all, the entire process of moving can be tedious, tiresome, and grueling. That’s likely why you hired your moving crew in the first place.

Be a good customer

While moving companies do get paid to facilitate your moves, it’s always a good way to show your appreciation for their hard work by tipping your movers. Exactly how much should you tip is also a rather loaded question!

photo of a mover holding a box

Figuring Out If and How Much Do You Tip:

Did they arrive on time?

This is perhaps the most important question to answer regarding how much to tip movers. After all, moving day can be stressful enough. Having your moving crew arrive late is a major issue that can result in even more stress added on top of everything.

Always reward good habits

If the movers arrived late, it should cut into how much to tip. After all, the moving company failed to deliver on their promises. However, if the movers arrived on-time, the moving company lived up to their professional obligations and are worthy of a tip.

Did they handle things safely?

One of the main reasons you likely made the effort and paid for the expense of hiring a professional moving company has to do with their ability to safely move everything from point A to point B. Therefore, a good rule of thumb is to factor in this very important question when asking yourself how much do you tip. Movers that took the time to carefully pack and move your belongings is much more worthy of a good tip than one that was careless with your stuff at the end of the move.

So if you’re keeping a scoreboard that helps determine how much to tip your movers, moving companies that treat your belongings as precious cargo is essential for tipping movers.

Bonus: What Colleges Are Located In Los Angeles?

Did they deliver a good customer-facing experience?

The movers that you hire will be interacting with you and your family during the move. After all, they will be going in and out of your old and new home. Therefore, you want to factor in whether or not they delivered their services with a smile and with good customer service.

A smile goes a long way

You should be tipping movers who are focused on delivering superb customer service. The job is not just about lifting heavy furniture several flights of stairs. It is also about making the customer feel calm and secure with their moving crew which ultimately helps determine how much to tip movers. The movers don’t have to be overly friendly, but they should certainly be respectful and considerate.

Did you have a difficult move?

You should be looking at the move objectively. You want to consider the difficulty of the move when you are calculating how much to tip movers. Was it considered a long distance move? Was it a local move? Did you have heavy furniture and other variables that factored into your moving costs?

Remember to throw a bit of karma in the air

Did they help pack your items? Did you move a lot of fragile items that were delivered in impeccable condition? Maybe acknowledge the extra level of difficulty for Covid 19 when determining the tip. Consider all of this when you are coming up with how much to tip movers.

Does long distance or short distance matter?

Typically, industry professionals recommend that you tip long distance movers within the range of 15 to 20 percent of the total cost of the move if you are moving between further distances. If you are making a local move, you could tip movers anywhere from 5 to 10 percent [1].

Tip your movers for a job well done!

While you shouldn’t necessarily feel obligated to tip movers, you should make an effort to tip hard work. Because of this, it is recommended to tip movers who help you during an otherwise stressful time, especially during Covid 19. By using the criteria above, you will certainly clear up the constant question running in your head during your move, “how much should I tip?”

You want to consider everything involved with the moving process to ensure that you tip your movers adequately for their hard work. Those who help facilitate your move would appreciate being recognized for delivering on their already high expectations. When you hire us for your next move, don’t let the fear of the unknown cause you more stress. Our professional movers are consummate professionals and they will exceed any expectations you have even regardless of a tip!

When people think of Los Angeles, they love that it is filled with all types of great scenery, from beaches to its fantastic city with mountains too. They also know that it is a land that is filled with things to do and see and they love to visit it regularly. Located in the southern part of California, it is the largest city in the state.

The Landscape Paved The Way

The downtown area of the city is built on a fault line so it is prone to earthquakes which makes it have very few large buildings or skyscrapers. That doesn’t matter to the people that live there because they love that it is known for having the most famous rock bands in the nation.

All different cultures of people make it their home and it has a population of over 18 million but few people know much about the beginnings of their city. However, they do know that it is referred to as the “City of Angels”.

The Beginnings of The City Of Los Angeles

There are fascinating things about Los Angeles and one of them is where it received its name from. Since it is the second-largest city in the United States of America, it is known for its excitement and entertainment.

The city was named El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles which translates to, “The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels” on September 4, 1781. The name comes from the Spanish language about a river called – El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula.

la reyna de los angeles is the origin of the name

El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles was the second pueblo (town) created during the Spanish colonization of California. The Spanish settlement began around 1769 when explorer Gaspar de Portolà reached the San Diego area and then made his way north.

As they came through today’s Elysian Park, they were awed by a river that flowed from the northwest, past their point, and on southward. This would later be known as the Los Angeles River.

Crespí named the river El Río de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles de la Porciúncula, meaning, in Spanish, “the River of Our Lady Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula”, or el pueblo de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles which translates to simply “the town of our lady the queen of angels”, and even simpler, “lady of the angels.” Also, referred to as “the town of the queen of the city of angels.” Various forms of the original name would be used during this time including a long version, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles del Rio Porciúncula.

town of the queen of the angels also known as pueblo de la reyna de los angeles

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo

The first European to sail and explore the California coast was named Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was most likely of Portuguese descent and he was an explorer and a soldier from Spain.

As he explored down the Southern California coast, he was a person that looked for riches and ways to make more money wherever he went. Between the years 1542 and 1543, he was best known for all expeditions that he took along the California coast in search of more and more, as he was a very ruthless type of soldier.

The Modern History Of Los Angeles

In 1781, the modern history of Los Angeles began. There were a total of 44 soldiers that decided to make the area their permanent site and the Spanish Governor of Las Californias Felipe de Neve instructed them to make it their permanent settlement. This was also authorized by Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli in downtown Los Angeles.

Neve was truly responsible for giving the new town the name, “El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Ángeles.” Because the new town, “el pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles was now labeled a pueblo, Los Angeles was granted a cabildo (town council).

El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula

When California Became A State Of The USA

California first became a state of the USA on April 4, 1850. In the 1870s, the City of Los Angles had half a century of extreme growth as the railroads arrived in the area. Twice, the city was the home of the Olympic Games. Once in 1932 and once in 1984. Since the city is prone to earthquakes, there were 72 people killed in 1994.

Because of being earthquake-prone, the city has very stringent rules on how the buildings are built. This allows the people in them and the actual structures themselves safe when the next earthquake hits the area. This goes for both the residential and professional buildings in the city of Los Angeles and the surrounding areas.

The Present And Future Of Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles looks vastly different now than when it was first being discovered. So much of the land and supporting industries have changed, but the history is certainly permanent.

Los Angeles continues to be an entertainment hub and a favorite destination for travelers as well as newcomers moving to Los Angeles. When they want to visit the area, they find that there are a plethora of options. There are resorts, hotels, motels, and numerous other ways that they can stay and take in all the sites of the area.

Studying the history of Los Angeles is something that they love to do and talking to the locals is a way that they do this. With the various nationalities that live in the area, LA is a place that offers quite a bit of culture for those that want to take it in.

In the future, it will continue to attract the young and the old for visiting and for becoming famous if they have the talent. They try their best at breaking into acting or music and many of them succeed.

One thing that we can tell you with authority is that when it comes to relocation, there is no fixed cost that you should expect to pay for your relocation no matter the size of the home that you choose to occupy. There are a lot of different factors that impact the overall cost to move. Read on to understand the top considerations that moving professionals take into account when determining how much to charge you for moving a one-bedroom apartment or even a house in the hills!

Top Factors That Affect The Cost Of A Relocation In LA

The Amount Of Goods You Own

The more goods you own, the more the effort (labor) that will be required during your relocation, which in turn affects the moving cost. Further, if you own a lot of items, more resources (vans) will be needed to move your goods. This will translate to more expenses on the part of the moving company, including the size of the moving truck, the different packing services and packing supplies, or even the amount of professional movers.

The Type Of Goods That You Own

Some items such as electronic gadgets and pianos require specialized packing before being transported because of their fragile nature. Failure to properly pack and transport these goods can lead to them getting damaged. If you own items that require special packing, expect to pay more for professional movers to handle these items with extra care.

The Type & Number Of Services That You Will Need

Moving involves more than simply bundling your valuables into a vehicle and moving into your new one-bedroom apartment. There are instances when you will need extra services such as help with packing, loading, or unloading as well as storage facilities. Should you choose to ask your moving company to render these types of services, your moving costs will shoot up. You would be shocked to know how many services are requested for even moving a one-bedroom in Los Angeles!

The Distance You Are Moving To Get To LA

The longer the distance you will be moving to get to your new one-bedroom apartment, the higher the cost to move. When asking yourself how much does it cost to move a one-bedroom, always remember that a long-distance move is far pricier than a shorter one.

Gas still rules our tanks!

Keep in mind that long-distance moving requires more gas being used and a greater chance of something going wrong during the transport. Therefore, the cost of moving from the valley to Hollywood let alone 1 000 miles outside of Los Angeles will certainly cost far more than moving just a few blocks away.

Local vs Long Distance?

A local move is less expensive than packing a moving truck and sending it across the country. The average cost between a local move and long-distance is not even close. This very reason is crucial when hiring a moving company with a superb reputation. Long-distance will most certainly affect the cost to move, so always consider this when asking your potential new landlord, “how much does this cost?”

Your Relocation Timeline

Most established and reputable moving companies like Real RocknRoll Movers tend to accommodate special expedited moving requests from clients. However, to accommodate such requests, you will have to pay higher than the normal rates for requests that are outside the standard guidelines. Even people who want to move to a one bedroom apartment can have varying degrees of special requests.

Your Preferred Mode Of Transportation During Relocation

There are modes of transportation that are faster than others. For example, when you choose to relocate your goods using a plane, your valuables will spend less time in transit compared to when your goods travel by road. Should you choose a faster mode of transportation, you are likely to be asked to pay more compared to when you request to use those conventional modes of transportation.

The Terms Of Service Offered By Your Moving Company

Ever wondered why some movers charge more than others? It is because of the extra value to clients. Simple research will reveal that firms that often charge less rates do not offer extra value such as insuring your possessions when they are in transit. Should you go for a moving company that charges higher rates specifically to move a one-bedroom apartment, expect to get extra value during your move. So before asking how much does it cost to move a one bedroom apartment and then judge the price, be clear about what your value system is. What is absolutely important to you as a customer before you go around shopping the average cost.

The Type Of Space That You Are Moving Into

If you are looking at the cost to hire a moving company for a one bedroom apartment, it means that you have fewer possessions compared to a person moving into a 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom house.

photo of girl in one bedroom apartment

Less Sweat for a one-bedroom apartment!

This means that your full-service moving costs will be based on volume which in turn affects the total amount of time for the move. Therefore, moving to a 1 bedroom apartment will certainly be lower than the larger residences.

Tips On How To Reduce Your Moving Costs

Below we have compiled our top ideas on how you can lower your moving cost when moving to 1 bedroom apartment.

1. Pack your possessions including specialty items that require bubble wrap to avoid being charged for extra packing services

2. Do extensive research on various moving companies and then compare the rates of the moving companies based on the moving services they offer

3. Pre-plan your move so that you can cut back on added expenses like storage

4. Hire movers that are trusted and reputable to avoid hidden fees that are unwarranted

5. Avoid a long-distance move when looking for your next one-bedroom apartment

Has the Idea of the “Dream Home” in LA Changed in Recent Years?

When it comes to the housing market in Los Angeles, it’s common knowledge that the region continues to be one of the most expensive real estate markets on the planet. Due to the popularity, great weather, and general charm of Los Angeles, it’s clear that this is a city people want to live in. In recent years, home construction has skyrocketed.

For those who are thinking about moving and/or building a house in Los Angeles whether it’s to live there and/or invest, the best place to start is with your finances in mind. Home construction is certainly not cheap given land costs, labor costs, building materials, etc. But add home construction in Los Angeles, and you have a different set of circumstances. For starters, building materials alone are generally more expensive in LA.

This guide is going to take a look at some of the key expenses associated with building a house in the heart of Los Angeles and how this number comes about.

General Costs of Building a House in Los Angeles

To run this type of calculation, it’s recommended to pick a spot in the city and go from there. If you are looking into the cost of building a new home in the San Fernando Valley, know that this will be on the lesser expensive side of Los Angeles. Certainly, the cost of building a house in the Valley was once a rather inexpensive endeavor, but since supply levels have fallen in the last half-decade, the cost of building a new custom home has risen.

Home construction has begun to spread far and wide around Los Angeles County. Building a custom home is almost unobtainable for most people given the cost per square foot in the beach towns and in the hills and canyons.

new construction in los angeles is in demand and very expensive

The land value in this part of the region is going to vary but it will most likely come out to be approximately $300,000-$400,000 for a lot of 5,000 square feet. Please note, this is just an average cost and some parts of the area may go a little higher or lower per square foot but most will remain somewhere within this range. Keeping all of this in mind, you are also going to have to account for regular fees that come with a project such as this.

These fees are going to include:

  • Permit Fees
  • School Fees
  • Architect Fees
  • Linkage Fee

Get Educated on the Various Fees Before and During The Home Building Process

With the linkage fee, you are going to have to pay approximately $8-$15 per square foot for the land of your new home. The idea is to give back to the city’s housing fund for any land that is being built on. This is the government’s way to make use of its land’s demand to give back to those in need of more affordable housing options around the area.

This means for 5,000 square feet, you are going to end up paying at least $40,000. You are also going to have to tack on additional preservation costs associated with insurance/tax that will come out to be approximately $10,000.

The Actual Cost To Build Has Many Things To Consider

It is now time to start thinking about the building costs that are going to come with setting up the property and getting it to look the way you want for your custom home. For labor, you are going to have to end up paying at least $100-$200 per person (daily).

For the average property, this is going to add up to approximately $200,000 but this number will vary depending on what is being done in the property. If you have a more elaborate design, expect the construction costs to ramp up due to the advanced home builders that would be required along with the building materials. The cost of building a new home is expensive let alone building a luxury custom home in Los Angeles.

Consider Alternative Energy Saving Measure When Building Your Custom Home

There are additional fees for being energy-efficient, which is a must in Los Angeles. In general, your best estimate is to assume you are going to end up paying approximately $250 per square foot. This means you are going to end up paying $625,000 for a 2,500 square foot home. Of course, finding a 2,000 square foot home is not out of the question in Los Angeles. I guess the better question is, does the money add up for living in a 2,000 square foot new home.

the many things to consider when building a new house in Los Angeles

A lot of developers are going to have set fees due to their warranty costs, insurance expense, and staffing. You are going to have to pay them for this element of the home building project too, which can add up. Each situation will be unique, but you can assume the figure is $80,000 for this type of custom home project.

Example Project:

1. Closing Costs and Commissions $50,000

2. Cost of Land $300,000

3. Cost of Construction and Preservation $500,000

4. Profit $80,000

5. Resale Purchase Price $930,000

This means you are going to have a set average cost of approximately $930,000 just to get the project completed from the moment you start for an average-sized new home. Please remember, this is for the most affordable part of the region for home building, which doesn’t have the same demand as other parts of Los Angeles.

This is something to take account of if you are thinking about reselling the property later on. A lot of people want to live in the higher demand areas of the city, which are going to have a much higher per square foot cost to build.

how to effectively plan for building a Los Angeles dream home

Final Thoughts on Building a Custom Home in LA

It’s important to note each situation is going to be unique depending on what a person is looking for in building a home. The rates listed here are average cost rates common in the region to build a home.

For those who are thinking about building a house in Los Angeles, it’s recommended to consult with expert home builders and a seasoned general contractor to learn more about your options. The city continues to be one of the most desired places to live and invest in, therefore home building in Los Angeles is in high demand.

When relocating to Los Angeles or any other city in the U.S, we as moving experts and the authorities recommend that you pay special attention to the safety rating for your chosen neighborhood as it will heavily impact your quality of life once you take up residence. As you have chosen to move to the city of Los Angeles, you may be wondering, how safe is Los Angeles? In this article, we will explore if Los Angeles as a whole is a safe city, how to determine if the area you are relocating to is safe and our top safety tips no matter where you are.

How Is The Safety Rating Of A City Determined?

There are several key factors that safety experts use to determine if a city is safe. The safety of an area is usually determined by comparing the crime rate in the place with the national average.

Some of the top warning signs that an area is unsafe include:

Too Many Abandoned Rental Houses

If prospective tenants are avoiding an area like the plague, it mostly usually means that their research has proven that the place is unsafe. In neighborhoods that are deemed safe, rental houses typically tend to be snatched off the market quickly.

Abandoned Business Premises

In an area that is deemed unsafe, entrepreneurs usually avoid opening up business for fear of being robbed or lack of clients since potential customers feel unsafe.

Heavy Police Presence

Police will always be present in an area with a heavy crime rate to deter criminals from making life unbearable for residents and visitors.

High Crime Rates

Professionals in the safety sector and policing authorities tend to periodically release crime statistics for cities across the U.S. A city/neighborhood that has been consistently fingered as having high crime rates is usually considered unsafe.

Is Los Angeles Safe?

Given the history of Los Angeles in the early nineties with the Los Angeles riots, a big question that many people from outside Los Angeles constantly ask, “is Los Angeles safe?” Like most other cities, the city of Los Angeles has safe neighborhoods and it also has areas that are considered to be generally unsafe. Los Angeles is known for many tourist attractions which is an indication that the city of Los Angeles is generally well policed making it generally safe.

One of the areas in the city of Los Angeles that is generally considered to be high-risk is the Southside as well as downtown Los Angeles. In the highlighted areas, safety is a bit of an issue because of gang activity.

Los Angeles is not all glitz and glamour

If you have traveled to downtown Los Angeles lately, especially during Covid 19, you will notice how desolate it may feel. For female travelers, I would recommend not venturing out too much at night around the wholesale district also known as Skid Row. There is a reason for why the public transit doesn’t have a main hub stationed in Skid Row. It’s because Skid Row has been decimated by violent crime and homelessness. If you do venture out to this side of downtown Los Angeles, you must make sure to be aware of your surroundings.

Make sure to take public transportation instead of walking on foot. Just by the looks of the sidewalks layered with tents and garbage, you’ll have your answer rather quickly to the burning question, is Los Angeles safe?

photo of skid row los angeles safe

This doesn’t look like Los Angeles..?

Skid Row is only a few miles from the famous Hollywood walk of fame, the beaches of Santa Monica, the mansions of Beverly Hills, and the historic Hollywood sign, yet if feels like a world away. When you think of southern California, you don’t necessarily equate it to violent crime and gang violence, but you must keep in mind that Los Angeles is a big city, and one of the biggest in the United States.

Formerly known as South Central Los Angeles, this neighborhood has suffered tremendously over the years from gang violence and violent crime. With the recent Covid 19 pandemic, South Central Los Angeles has only affected even more. If you want some travel tips for Los Angeles, we would recommend that female travelers avoid the area and travel to other parts of the city of Los Angeles during their visit.

So is South Los Angeles safe? The short answer is no. Gang violence has become a part of the fabric of the area, and remains a problem for outside investments to come from other parts of the United States. In 2019, violent crime was estimated at 1,702, which was a striking 347% greater than the national average for the United States. Property crime was also high at 3,022.

Will public transportation help keep Los Angeles safe?

Many believe that public transit can help keep a big city like Los Angeles safe. The school of thought is that with more options for public transport, the less desirable areas will start to be more easily accessible. And in turn, perception will change. It will be easier to get around, and travel through. What once seemed too dangerous and inaccessible will now be perceived as far less dangerous with new public transport portals and other safe options of travel. This will bring in more outside money to these neighborhoods, and help people see the possibility for safe night life and growth.

Is a safe South and Downtown Los Angeles wishful thinking?

Of course it will take city council to allocate more public funds to help turn things around. And great Los Angeles leadership to see the possibilities, but if it means it will help keep Los Angeles safe, then it certainly is a righteous strategy. One that could not only be beneficial to the people of Los Angeles and the surroundings neighborhoods, but for the United States as a whole.

Is safety a micro or macro issue?

It is important to point out that safety starts at the personal level. If you take the personal safety precautions that we will discuss later in this article, you can expect to have a generally great and safe time in Los Angeles.

We will now quickly highlight the safety risk for different sectors/activities in Los Angeles…

-Overall Safety Rating: Medium

-Safety When Taking Taxis: High

-Safety When Enjoying Nightlife: Medium

-Safety In Residential Areas: Depends on the area

-Safety Level In Areas With Tourist Attractions: High

A Simplified Guide On How To Know If Your Chosen Residential Neighborhood In Los Angeles Is Safe

As mentioned earlier, the safety rating for residential areas across Los Angeles depends on the specific neighborhood. Below are a few tips on how to identify safe areas to relocate to in Los Angeles.

– On visiting the area, you can see young kids moving and playing across their neighborhoods freely

– The locality has many thriving local businesses that are open for long hours

– There are neighborhood security watches manned by neighborhood property owners

– The data provided by crime watch analysts indicates that the locality has a consistently low crime rate

– There are regular community programs and events organized by homeowners in the area

– Police presence is almost non-existent

Top Tips On How To Stay Safe In Los Angeles

Though the authorities often do all within their power to keep a neighborhood safe, the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe is to take steps to guarantee your safety. For example you can:

– Avoid walking alone at night in neighborhoods that are considered unsafe

– When visiting new areas, ensure that you protect your possessions

-Report any suspicious persons or activities to the police without delay

– Try to avoid travel in unsafe neighborhoods especially at night

– Become an active participant in neighborhood programs/activities that are designed to enhance safety levels in your locality

– Implement safety precautions provided by the police

– Since most establishments accept credit card payments, avoid walking around with bundles of cash

– Before moving into an area, carry out thorough research to ascertain that the neighborhood will provide a safe living environment for you and your loved ones

The piano is a wonderful instrument to play and can bring about a sense of joy and relaxation to pianists of all ages. That being said, when it comes to moving, being a pianist certainly comes with its disadvantages. Indeed, the cost to move a piano can be a costly affair, and with good reason.

Allow us to provide a guide as to what a moving company takes into account when providing a price to move a piano and what to expect when it comes to asking for piano moving quotes.

See Related: What Is Considered The City Of Los Angeles?

What Factors Do Piano Movers Take Into Account When Providing A Quote?

The Size And Weight

Granted, every piano is heavy, however, some of them will tip the scales more than others. For instance, a grand piano or even a baby grand piano is going to weigh more, as well as be larger, than a standard upright piano. Piano movers will take this into account as both weight and size will increase the manpower required to lift and move the piano, as well as potentially the transportation needed for the move.

Moving an upright piano might involve a different technique or equipment than moving a grand piano. Therefore, the piano moving costs can certainly vary based on the type of piano. Given the different types of wood and other materials that the piano is made out of can also affect the weight of the piano, which of course in turn affects the average cost to move the piano.

The Piano Moving Logistics Of The Current And New Location

Another factor that piano movers need to carefully take into account is the passage that the piano will pass through as it is moved from one location to the next. If there are staircases, steps, or tight corners, such maneuvers will require further skill or perhaps specialized equipment to ensure that the piano and the movers make it from A to B safely.

Expect a higher price where such challenges are present as the piano moves from its current location to its new location. Given the potential value of the piano, the cost to move such a prized possession can certainly vary if the owner wants to take extra measures to ensure the safety of the piano.

the average cost of moving the piano

The Distance

As is the case for moving anything, distance is an essential part of the calculation of piano moving. A local move will, of course, be much cheaper than a long-distance piano move.

Most piano movers will provide a calculation per mile while others may use wider distance metrics given the location of the. It’s good to ask for a breakdown of the price so that the amount charged which relates to piano moving distance is clearly outlined.

It is also worthwhile to note that sometimes, moving a piano will not require long-distance traveling. There may be a request for moving a piano within the current property. For instance, someone may wish to move their piano from one room to another or perhaps to move a piano from one floor to another. Even in such circumstances, it is still advisable to employ the services of professional piano moving companies to care for the task.

This will ensure that the piano is lifted and moved safely both for the piano itself and for those doing the piano lifting. Of course, the piano moving cost to move a piano within the current property will be much less than moving a piano in the other scenarios that we have outlined to this point unless there are considerable challenges to take into account when calculating the final moving cost for the piano. So before you ask how much does it cost, have a clear understanding of the distance when moving a piano.

Bonus: How far is San Francisco from Los Angeles?

The Value Of The Piano

Some professional piano movers may also consider the value of the piano when providing a quote. A standard acoustic Yamaha piano, for instance, would be much cheaper to replace or repair if needed than a rare Steinway & Sons piano. Don’t be surprised if a potential piano moving company may ask for the value of the piano and make sure to provide an honest answer in response to their query.

What To Expect When It Comes To Quotes From A Piano Moving Company

Taking the above factors into account, it is easy to see that the price that piano moving companies provide can vary greatly from one client to the next. However, as a rough ballpoint figure, a moving cost of between $100 to $300 could be expected for moving a piano locally where there are no significant additional extras (for instance a grand piano, staircases to navigate, and so forth). To move a piano long distance is naturally going to cost more and depending on the distance, the cost to move per mile could easily reach close to the $1,000 mark.

Of course, if this was the case it may be necessary to give thought to how much the piano is worth (provided it does not have sentimental value) and whether it would be more financially viable to sell the piano and purchase another one at the new location when considering the final cost to move.

when planning to move an upright piano consider weight and value

The Bottom Line When Asking How Much Does It Cost to Move a Piano

When asking for quotes from a piano moving company, it is a good idea to request a moving services breakdown of the final figure to move your piano. This can help to compare one mover with another and make a choice that is reasonable from a financial viewpoint.

Of course, cheaper is certainly not always the most cheerful option and when it comes to moving your piano, it is vital that the piano movers are fully qualified, adequately skilled, and have the necessary insurance to ensure that those ivory keys make it to their new location without sustaining any damage along the way. We certainly hope the anxiety of asking yourself how much does it cost when moving a piano is far less now that we have laid it all out for you.

There are two major cities in the state of California that many people live in. One of those is San Francisco, located near Northern California, and the other is in Southern California called Los Angeles. Most people refer to Los Angeles as LA if you are native to California. You may also be referred to San Francisco as Frisco or the bay area. If you are moving to one of these locations from the other, you might be interested in finding out how far you are going to have to travel. The length of time it takes to arrive, and the total distance that you will travel can vary depending upon the route that you take. Here is a brief overview of how far it really from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

How Far Is San Francisco From Los Angeles?

If you decide to travel a route that will be the fastest, you will likely leave San Francisco, traveling northeast over the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. This will take you directly past Treasure Island, on the 580, past the city of Oakland, San Leandro, and into Castro Valley.

It is from there that you will continue on the 580, passing through Pleasanton, Livermore, and eventually Tracy where the 580 will merge with I-5. Then, from Interstate 5, you will travel south to Los Angeles. The total distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles is going to be 382 miles. The total time will be just under six hours.

photo of san francisco to los angeles distance

What If You Do Not Travel Down Interstate 5?

If you decide to not travel down Interstate 5, you can take another route. One of the most scenic routes from San Francisco to Los Angeles is traveling down the iconic Highway 1 so that you have the Pacific Ocean on your right the entire drive down.

Awe-inspiring beach town from Los Angeles to San Francisco

This will take you through communities such as Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Santa Barbara, and eventually you will reach Los Angeles. The total drive time from San Francisco to Los Angeles is increased significantly. You will be driving a total distance of over 450 miles, and it will take nearly 8 hours.

What Is The Distance Between San Francisco And Los Angeles As The Crow Flies?

The term, as the crow flies, represents the direct distance from one point to the next in a straight line. If you were to do this between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the total distance is just under 350 miles. This direct route is even much shorter than most planes will take as they tend to fly out over the ocean, and then back into Los Angeles or San Francisco to land at the airports. If you draw a straight line from Los Angeles and San Francisco on a map, you will see that is it not exactly a straight line. It is rather curved which means that Los Angeles is not exactly due South.

Route That Most People Take

If you would prefer to travel on a highway that more people take, Highway 99 might be a better choice. To get there, you could travel over the bay bridge, through Vallejo, past Mount Diablo, and over to the city of Stockton. Once you are there, you can head south on the 99, driving several hundred miles until you reached your destination. As with the trip down Interstate 5, you would have to travel over the Grapevine, the sinuous route over the mountains that are in between Bakersfield and Los Angeles.

Bonus: The Top 10 Music Venues In Los Angeles in 2020

The famous golden road stretch

The reason that many people take this highway instead of Interstate 5 is that there are many places to stop by comparison. Either way, however, you will still have to endure the toxic air of the Bakersfield area which begins right after you pass through Fresno. However, those iconic pictures of the golden road with the mountains in the background are the 99 or 5 freeway. It essentially is the open bridge that connects Los Angeles to San Francisco. It has inspired many artists from San Francisco to Los Angeles and has inspired many great songs too.

Is It Better To Fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles?

Regarding time, you will likely get from Los Angeles to San Francisco in a much shorter time. However, it depends on when you are leaving and whether or not you have someone to pick you up. If it’s a short visit, then flying down might be the best course of action.

Airlines miles add up quick from Los Angeles to San Francisco

There are a few airlines that provide Los Angeles to San Francisco round trip flights daily as you’ll find many business people commute from Los Angeles to San Francisco. This drastically cuts travel time or rather eliminates driving time. You certainly won’t see all that the 5 or 99 freeways or highway 1 have to offer along the way, but maybe save that road trip for a special occasion one day. We should note that San Francisco international airport offers many public transportation options to get to downtown San Francisco easily including the magnificent Bart transit system.

photo of scenic highway 1 san francisco los angeles

Nonstop options for SFO and LAX to Las Vegas or Hawaii

Another reason that San Francisco and Los Angeles have become too desirable is that not only can you drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco or rather fly back and forth so easily, so airlines have made it easy these days to make connections from both San Francisco and Los Angeles to popular tourist destinations like Hawaii and Las Vegas. Since both sit close to either San Francisco and Los Angeles, many people have made a habit of doing personal and business trips together in connection with all four destinations. In most cases, these destinations are off-limits for most of the midwest, south, and the eastern United States. Doing a road trip of this caliber seems like a far off dream one day. The travel time is almost incomprehensible. But for people who live in San Francisco and Los Angeles, this is a way of life.

San Francisco and Los Angeles go together like peanut butter and jelly

Los Angeles and San Francisco also have sports in common. Both cities have a big appetite for professional sports and entertainment. Los Angeles and San Francisco both have surrounding areas like Anaheim just south of Los Angeles and Oakland which is just outside of San Francisco that also share teams and fans alike.

Winning is a way of life in Los Angeles and San Francisco

This creates a huge market for professional sports for both Los Angeles and San Francisco. It’s no wonder that both cities have had their fair share of championship titles, whereas the rest of the major metropolitan cities in the United States aren’t so fortunate.

So… San Francisco or Los Angeles?

If you are thinking about moving from Los Angeles to San Francisco or moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, you now know how long it will take and how far you must go. Although the fastest route would be taking Interstate 5 down the middle of California, other routes are also possible. If you don’t want to travel down Highway 1 on the coast, you could also travel beyond Interstate 5 to Highway 99. This is one of the most popular routes for traveling between the state capital, Sacramento, and Los Angeles as it takes you through many cities including Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, Bakersfield, and finally Los Angeles.
